MizT: Press

Artist Spotlight:
'Miz T' Brings the Funny

What got you into comedy?

"I dared myself. I saw a sign at the Top of the Mark [a local Austin music venue] asking for musicians and artists."

What is your favorite part about doing stand-up?

"I like that I get to shoot from the hip. It allows me to jump from subject to subject. I also like the subject matter because I think a lot of the shows on television don't have a positive message. I feel like I do. I refer to my shows as a ministry.

Where do you get your material?

"I get my comedy from every day life. I was a Sunday school teacher. I taught first to fifth grade. The kids were a great source of material. Listening to children try to recite the ten commandments is one of the more entertaining things you will ever hear.

In another track on the CD she recounts the time in Bible class where a child asked, "How do I get to Heaven?" Before Tranea could reply, another student shouted out, "Be six feet under!"

Despite what one might think in reading that last title, she does not do blue comedy and the title revolves around a funny story about a family member getting confused when describing a medical condition.

The CD contains a blend of her humor and her faith in God. She considers her comedy to be a gift from God. She also comes from a talented family: Her mother, Faye Prosser, was a well-known Austin-based Gospel singer. Her father, Harvey Prosser (deceased), was also in a famous quartet that sang in various churches in the Capitol City.

Miz T performed earlier this year at the Austin Women's Film and Literacy Festival. You can see her perform at the Festival again next year in May.
